| Belarusian tennis-player Viktoria Azarenko successfully started the 2008 US Women’s Open in New York.
In the first round Viktoria defeated Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic. The next opponent of the Belarusian tennis-player is Iveta Benesova from the Czech Republic, too.
Another representative of Belarus, Olga Govortsova, is to play her first match against the Czech Sandra Zahlavova on August 26. |

| In January-June 2008, the trade between Belarus and Ukraine exceeded $2.5 billion which is almost 2 times up from the same period of 2007, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Economy Ministry.
In H1 2008, the export of Belarusian goods to Ukraine increased 2.6 times to reach $1.5 billion, the import picked up 48.1% and exceeded $1 billion. Belarus posted a surplus in trade with Ukraine at the amount of $467. |

| Head of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission Gert Arens and Head of the CIS Observation Mission Sergei Lebedev are to meet on the election day, September 28, BelTA learnt from the CIS Executive Committee.
The relevant agreement was reached during the meeting between Chief of the staff of the CIS Observation Mission Nauryz Aidarov and Gert Arens. The sides discussed the organization of the work of the missions during the Belarusian parliamentary elections and agreed to cooperate on the level of the heads of the missions and on the level of experts. |

| The harvest campaign in Belarus is drawing to a close. About 7% of the total cropping area is left to be harvested, BelTA learnt from the main plant growing department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Foodstuffs.
The Brest and Gomel oblasts have already harvested all the grain crops, only 3% of the area under buckwheat and 2.5% of the area under millet are left to be cropped. The Grodno, Minsk and Mogilev oblasts have to harvest 4. |

| In H1 2008 Belarus traded with 171 countries. The goods were exported to 128 countries and imported from 157, BelTA was told in the Ministry of Statistics and Analysis.
In January-June Belarus’ trading partners were Russia (49% of the total trade), the Netherlands (9.2%), Ukraine (6.9%), Germany (4.5%), Poland (3.9%), Latvia (3.1%), the UK (2.6%), China (2%) and also Brazil and Italy.

| In January-June Belarus’ foreign trade in goods and services swelled by 57.1% in comparison with the same period of last year to $39.9 billion, the Ministry of Statistics and Analysis told BelTA.

| The gross grain harvest in Belarus has exceeded 5.2 million tonnes, BelTA learnt from the main plant growing department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The Minsk oblast has cropped 1,239.500 tonnes, the Grodno oblast 1,035.000 tonnes. The top three also includes the Brest oblast with 943,000 tonnes. The Mogilev oblast has cropped 653,700 tonnes, Gomel 842,600 tonnes and Vitebsk oblast 504,500 tonnes. |

| The National Bank of Belarus will raise the refinancing rate by 0.25 percentage points up to 10.5% on August 13, BelTA learnt from the information department of the National Bank.
According to the Bank, this decision is aimed at raising the yield of deposits in the national currency, fostering the growth of deposits of businesses and households as well as balancing the financial market taking into consideration internal and external factors. |

| In January-July the Lukoml state district power plant (Vitebsk oblast) produced 8,049 billion kWh of electrical power, up 9% from the same period last year, BelTA was told at the plant.
As a rule, the capacity utilization peaks in summer and the Lukoml plant produces around 60% of the total electrical power generated in the country during this season. In July this year the average load per unit reached 253. |
